Loft Ideas for Your Wooden Shed

Suffering from chronic disorganization or pack-rat syndrome? Adding a loft to your wooden shed, especially in a Gambrel style storage building, can cure all of your storage ills—and it can be used in other nifty ways, too. Whether you already have a loft or are considering one, we have some ideas on how to help you maximize your overhead storage space.

lofts for wooden storage shedsDon’t throw everything front-and-center. Even in our in-home cabinets, bookcases and closets, we have a tendency to do the same thing: literally throw all of our seasonal items right at the top without thinking about it. Problem is that this leads to disorganization and chaos later when you need to retrieve these once-a-year items.

Quick solution: Map out your storage loft in quadrants—there is a left, right and back side of it, too. Then organize your things according to usage. Invest in different colors of plastic containers so you can color-coordinate these items (i.e., green is for outdoor accessories, red is for holiday gear, etc.). Or purchase a labeling kit from a crafts or home improvement store.

Shed some light on the situation. If you’re regularly going to climb up to grab something out of your loft, you may want to make it easier to see up there—and grabbing a flashlight isn’t always the best solution. Add a nonventing large skylight, a solar shed light, or a battery LED. 1000bulbs.com offers viable lighting solutions.

Not just for storage. If you don’t have much to store in your wooden shed, or if you are not using your shed for a traditional purpose (i.e. crafting, home office, etc.), then truly make your shed a home away from home. You can convert your loft into a lounge space, especially if you have a large storage shed or garage-size option that accommodates an entire second story with stairs. FYI: Be sure to contact us, or speak with another professional about weight restrictions. Also, double-check with your local ordinance to make sure this use of your shed complies with the rules and regulations.

Right on. A shed is basically a mnitaiure house. Your options for design are unlimited. If you go to the link in the description, you will see a massive shed I built. I intend to move that shed next to my pond and build it out into a full-fledged dwelling and a nice one, with a loft bedroom, skylights to view the stars on the way to slumber.Thank you for comment!
